Coach Jim McHugh
My volleyball career started in the 5th grade, when my best friend
David told me, I was going to play volleyball on the school team with him. I had never heard of the sport before, but I figured
if Dave plays, I quess I can give it a try. I went to a few practices, even played in my first game, but was'nt sold on it,
after all at that time I was the youngest member of the Hobbie Surf team in Puerto Rico and was having a blast. But them,
Dave took me to a real intense match with the two biggest rivals in our metro area, WOW, I was hooked, the excitement was
incredible, I just had to be one of those players. Well I've never looked back, and I have had an incredible career, traveling
around the world as a player and a coach.
I was very
fortunate to have coaches that saw things in me I did not see myself, and believed in me when I did not believe in myself.
They help me shape and mold my personality, my beliefs, and my drive, to always work to be the best that I could be. I am
still very close friends with my high school coach, Luis who later became my teammate in the professional league's.
I'm not sure that I will ever be able to thank those coaches enough, that gave so graciously of their time so I could become
what I am. I can only hope that some day I can give to others what has been given to me.
My coaching philosophy is very simple, For players, work hard to become good, work the hardest
to become the best. When you think you've done enough, go one more round. That could be one more round than your opponent
was willing to do. As a team, It is never the 6 best players that make a winning team, its always the 6 players that play
the best together that make a winning team.
